GENERAL RULES

  • It is advisable to start breast examination at youth, so that this practice becomes a habit.
  • It should be done every month, 7-10 days after menstruation because during the period your breasts might hurt or be swollen.
  • If you do not have the period anymore or you are pregnant, the exam must be done every month and, if possible, the same day of the month.
  • If you are breastfeeding you must do the exam every month after breastfeeding (so that your breasts are not full of milk).
  • Even if you have breast implants, you should examine your breasts every month. You should ask you surgeon to help you differentiate the implant from the breast tissue.

RISK FACTORS

  • Sex. It mainly appears in women. It may also affect men, but the probability is scarce.
  • Age. 60% of women who suffer breast cancer are over 60.
  • Genes. There are two kinds of genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, whose mutation can cause breast cancer.
  • Relatives affected. When a first degree relative (mother, sister or daughter) has suffered breast cancer, the risk multiplies by two. When it is a second degree relative (grandmother, aunt or cousin), the risk increases slightly.
  • Menstrual period. The sooner your period starts (if it stars before you are 12), the higher the risk is compared to those who started later. Women with late menopause (after you are 55) have a higher risk.
  • Life style. Abuse of alcohol, smoking, obesity, etc.

CASES IN WHICH YOU SHOULD VISIT YOUR DOCTOR:

  • When there are differences between the breasts’ size or consistency.
  • If there are changes in the breast skin similar to orange peel or any other stain, wrinkle or fold.
  • If there is nipple discharge without your being pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you detect the presence of folds or wounds in your nipples.
  • If you notice any lump in your armpits or your breasts.
  • If you notice any change in a lump or a scar you have had for a long time.
  • Pain in your breast, armpit or chest.
  • Alterations in the feeling (muscle tension, pain or heat).

USEFUL ADVICE

  • The glove is not toxic; it is reusable and does not make your hand dirty.
  • Be careful if you have long nails or with any sharp objects as they could damage the glove.
  • Keep away from stoves, fire, solar radiation, etc. Do not tread on the glove nor compress it.

Did you have any doubt concerning this technique, please ask your doctor or your nurse for advice.
